Expert Insights into DLA Contracting Compliance

Understanding RFID Packaging Integrity for DLA Shipments

In the world of Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) contracting, shipping your product is only half the battle. Ensuring that the shipment is received and tracked accurately via Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technical requirement that frequently trips up new vendors. Compliance with MIL-STD-129 is not optional; it is a critical component of successful performance.

Passive vs. Active RFID

DLA primarily utilizes passive RFID technology. Unlike active tags, which have an internal power source, passive tags are energized by the reader. For contractors, this means you must utilize tags that meet specific EPCglobal standards (Generation 2, Class 1).

The Placement Factor

Where you place the RFID tag is as important as the tag itself. Improper placement can lead to "RF shielding" where the signal is blocked by the contents of the container, especially if the items are metallic.

Data Integrity and VSM

Your RFID data must match the Advanced Shipment Notice (ASN) sent through the Vendor Shipment Module (VSM) or Wide Area Workflow (WAWF). Discrepancies between the physical tag UID and the electronic record will trigger a shipping discrepancy report (SDR), delaying payment and impacting your vendor score.
